Christopher Hitchens is a contrarian and author. He’s the contributing editor at Vanity Fair and Slate, and this past year he released his controversial book God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything.
This interview took place in a Shul (A place of prayer for Jews) and it is customary for even non-believers to wear a yarmulke on the premises.

Pray tell,
Why is my favorite atheist wearing a yarmulke for
this interview?
Thanks,
Alty
November 11th, 2007 at 8:54 pm
I cannot get enough of Hitchen’s insights and listening to him makes me giggle with a similarity of conviction. It’s funny as hell that there are doors interrupting the interview: can’t people show some god-forsaken respect for the man????? Funny in the sense that this man’s time is valuable because he is of a notable yet celebrity-like status and if I was conducting the interview I would tell some bitches to shut the hell up!
November 11th, 2007 at 9:53 pm
mr.h has all the guile one would ever need and correct on many aspects however he appears never to condemn israel, why??
November 12th, 2007 at 1:50 am
Because he thinks Israel doesn’t need to be condemned perhaps?
November 12th, 2007 at 3:00 am
If you find out why, I need to know since I’ve never condemned Israel, either, and that is puzzling to me.
November 12th, 2007 at 3:31 am
If Mr. H in all of his guile never condemns Israel, then maybe Israel does not need condemnation in his opinion. Why is that even relevant for JK to mention unless JK is pro-facist anti-democracy in his/her mid-East political leanings. JK let the jack-boots show.
November 12th, 2007 at 4:33 am
Nice interview, but maybe get a little WD-40 for that door! Hahahaha
November 12th, 2007 at 9:55 am
steve has a bias on certain aspects of theft it would appear also that profiling isnt his strongest subject and perhaps history also.only the bad guys are wrong and the good prevails huh steve.
November 12th, 2007 at 10:43 am
other than what we are doing to the environmnt, how we co-exist w/ an islama/facist regime w/ the bomb is maybe the question free societies of our time. i belive sam harris goes even further in “end of faith” in warning readers of the inheirent dangers of a state run by those in death cults being able to threaten taking down milions w/ them.
November 12th, 2007 at 3:10 pm
If one was familiar with Mr. Hitchens’s writings, particularly the compilation ‘Blaming the Victims’ that he edited with Edward Said, one wouldn’t think he was some kind of pro-Israel dupe.
November 12th, 2007 at 3:39 pm
How come Hitchens is wearing a yarmulke and the interviewer not ?
November 12th, 2007 at 4:05 pm
sort of felt sorry for that poor interviewer. seemed as if he was scared shitless by the mere presence of mr. hitchens. there were plenty of opportunities for interesting follow up questions that weren’t but should’ve been taken. the questions that were presented, though, were pretty good, and as always mr. hitchens made the most out of answering them.
November 12th, 2007 at 6:22 pm
he went cuz’ he’s a rebel wifout a cause…
November 14th, 2007 at 9:10 am
It is obvious that the lad doesn’t know much of the topics and is not paying keen attention to what hitchens says.
Otherwise it is a brief inteview
November 14th, 2007 at 12:57 pm
Maybe it is me but I had a hard time understanding Mr. Hitchens. Too much of a hard English accent.
November 14th, 2007 at 12:59 pm
Maybe it is me but I had a hard time understanding Mr. Hitchens’ hard English accent.
November 17th, 2007 at 11:24 pm
I too wish I did not have such a hard time understanding Mr. Hitchens—I am so curious in what he has to say–I want to find what he has written or spoken on Jesus–what he thinks of him–what he was up to and about–what is myth and what we can accept as fact —-in Mr. Hitchens opinion from his study of Jesus
November 18th, 2007 at 2:05 am
While I don’t agree with Christopher, I do respect him. From this interview, great interview by the way, it is clear to me that it is not God who has not existed to Hitchens but man’s inability to show “God” towards each other.
I also have to applaud Hitchens for allowing his daughter the freedom and with his encouragement I may add, to explore her own spirituality. It seems that a seed of doubt may still lie within Mr. Hitchens and it is man, not God who has drawn him to this conclusion.
I also want to say that this a fantastic interview and I for one am thankful I say it. Well done.
November 18th, 2007 at 4:19 pm
Mr H. wears a yarmulke and does not criticize Israel because he knows who totally controls the Media around the world and especially in the USA and therefore his financial well being.
In other words MONEY.
November 19th, 2007 at 1:03 pm
Hah! You people still holding out hope that the Hitch will be saved crack me up =) The man not only despises organized religion, many do that and still have personal faith in a divine being… No, he actually despises the very idea of God and the afterlife (I’m inclined to agree with him).
And while he may not condemn Israel, he has certainly condemned the fundamentalist Jewish settlers who believe they have a holy right to the whole region.
November 19th, 2007 at 7:59 pm
Rachel, spirituality does not point to religion. Religion picks up spiritual ideas and channels them into a closed contemplative system. Our spirituality is a welcome product of the depth of our mind’s capability. The cosmos and our little, beautiful planet’s place in it are much more magnificent and awesome than the god religions would have us believe in could ever be. Our practical and spiritual duty is to find solutions to the widespread misery we allow a major part of our kind suffer, a misery which humanity has largely created itself. The more we can find out about the workings of our mind through contemplation and science, the closer we get to a solution without relating to supernatural claims about our existence.
November 19th, 2007 at 8:24 pm
There is no other revealed testament after Christ. Nothing can come after the fulfilment of Gods plan by the complete work of Christ. As the question has always been, what more can be done to be saved and enter heaven? Islam is clearly a made religion, as it does nothing to change the hearts of men for the good and in fact caters to the most base of human emotions, greed, hate, murder and sexual abuse. The sad thing about Christopher Hitchens and his daughter is the foolish believe that experiencing all religions he hopes his daughter will find one she will be happy with. Religion should be about truth. Clearly all religions cannot be true. So the question again must be, what more can be done to be saved and enter heaven? Christ is clearly the only way as NO other religion places heaven as a gift given by God not for being good or doing right but acknowledging and relying totally on Gods chosen method and not mans. It truly is amazing what God has done! John 3:16
November 19th, 2007 at 10:24 pm
Tim: “Clearly all religions cannot be true.”
You’re so right. Now you need to make the next relatively small leap - none of them are true. Once you understand why you so easily dismiss Islam as being a made religion, you should have little trouble working out why many of us think the same of the Judeo Christian gods and fairies.
Tim: “… sad … foolish believe that experiencing all religions he hopes his daughter will find one she will be happy with.”
Nonsense. He’s happy to allow her to learn about all religions, and therefore reasonably confident that she will work out what a load of superstitious nonsense *all* religions are.
Tim: “Christ is clearly the only way …”
Oh, really?! Evidence? No, I didn’t think so. You’re making the mistake of many people deluded by their religious convictions - saying what you want to be true does not automatically make it so.
November 20th, 2007 at 12:12 am
I, for one, look forward to Tim’s evidence. I’ve yet to see any from any Christian or theist ever, to convince me that their faith is any less that it appears to be: some combination of wishful thinking, superstition, and/or inherited cultural bias. All the same, I’m always open to new evidence.
November 20th, 2007 at 4:42 am
Many christians go agnostic/atheist as soon as they care to ask the question: “Where do this book (the bible) come from?”. There are very good answers to that question and when piling up the known history, the content of the book and other world religions, one will find that Christianity is one of the least convincing religions on the planet. It’s key sucess is in it’s rejection of intellectualism. It teaches people that they are too stupid to ask questions, too stupid to understand. They downgrade humans like worms, just like any cult do. As long as they keep people broken and their brains on a childrens level, they can continue to convince people that they NEED christianity because they born broken and are worth crap. But even if their God treats them like battered wives, he still loves them?
The one who believe that the only way for an omnipotent creator to deliver a message to his children is to become human, expell a few demons and then die on a cross, are missing a few screws in his head, and while Jews are free to reject Genesis as an early pre-moses myth, Christians cannot. When you actually read Atrahasis, Enuma Elish and Ugarit Mythology you realise where Genesis comes from. It’s also surprising how few christians who realise that the Old Testament, the story about Jesus and then Paulus letters, in fact deliver 3 completely different messages and are really 3 completely different religions. Furthermore, Jews are allowed to reinterpret their religions while christians sit there with the original bible without being allowed to reinterpret it thanks to Jesus words.
Another fun point is that so few christians actually read the bible in Greek/Hebrew. The mistranslations are numerous, including changing God’s name and Jesus personality… You have to give Muslims credit for knowing their religion far more than christians do. The vast majority of the christians have not even read the actual bible while muslims read the Quran every year, in Arabic, even if that’s not their mothers language. I sooner buy the Brahma than the Israelan God, especially when you can actually track the history of YHWH/Elohim’s origins. You do know that despite 200 years of modern research, no character of the Old Testament have been proven right? Not only that, archeaology points that the Kingdom of Juda was not in it’s peak until 700bc, the oldest bible is written 400bc. Also, at the time of Moses supposed exodus to Canaan, Canaan was an egyptan province. The fact that Moses flee to an Egyptian-lead country is one of the greatest blunders of the bible, except for Abraham making a deal with pharisees about 1000 years before the Pharisees entered the Canaan region…
Christians should spend more time reading history and litterature, less time praying.
November 20th, 2007 at 5:57 am
The problem with Tim and rest of the “gazing populace” is that they have been conditioned NOT to read and not to think. When it is a sin and a danger to your salvation to actually think, they do the thing most simple people do and obey the authorities who control them.
Tim, if you want to pull yourself out of this myopic, faith based, common man, blind hole you are in, you have got to start reading. And I don’t mean the so called holy scriptures.
November 20th, 2007 at 6:31 am
For the love of Hitchins, please oil that notably squeaky door.
November 20th, 2007 at 10:01 am
“All religions […] make the same mistake, preferring faith over reason, and reason is the only candle by which we can read … or see.”
Great line.
November 20th, 2007 at 10:17 am
Aggggh, that noise and squeaking constantly in the background is really awful….
Good interview though, good questions.
November 20th, 2007 at 1:18 pm
Sorry guys, the Facilities Manager was always popping his head in and out the door, causing the squeaky noises. He should have just stood inside of the room and shut his mouth
He couldn’t decide if he wanted to be inside or outside and was completely oblivious to the noises he was making.
November 24th, 2007 at 4:37 am
Because Israel doesn’t need to be condemned. It is a democracy and the only apartheid racism there is is the Palestinian Nationalism which wants a judenrein state in land that was Jewish for thousands of years.
November 27th, 2007 at 7:46 pm
John,
If you live in the US please return the land on which your house stands to the native americans. It was theirs for thousands of years. And if you don’t wish to give it up they may take it back by force. And if you resist they’ll give you a new name: “terrorist”.
November 28th, 2007 at 8:39 pm
I was enthralled with C.H. and his answers, but I couldn’t help noticing his body language. Could he have been more uptight?
November 30th, 2007 at 1:27 pm
I am an ex-mathematician and am a Buddhist.
There is (probably) an external world, but we only know it through our senses. Thus we make models of the external world, and one model; is “better” than another because it conforms with experiment more. Thus there is no such thing as truth: there are lies, but truth only occurs within models.
I notice there is no mention of Buddhism in your columns.

God has spoken in the Bible and has said that the Jewish people would be scattered throughout the Earth for their disobedience, they would be hated and put to death, but God would bring them back to the land of their fathers.
Isaiah 11:11-12 NIV - “In that day the Lord will reach out his hand a second time to reclaim the remnant that is left of his people from Assyria, from Lower Egypt, from Upper Egypt, from Cush, from Elam, from Babylonia, from Hamath and from the islands of the sea. He will raise a banner for the nations and gather the exiles of Israel; he will assemble the scattered people of Judah from the four quarters of the earth.”
Israel, a nation that had not really existed as a separate nation for nearly 2,500 years, was declared a new sovereign state by an act of the United Nations on May 14, 1948. The nation was born in a day.
Isaiah 66:8 NIV - “Who has ever heard of such a thing? Who has ever seen such things? Can a country be born in a day or a nation be brought forth in a moment? Yet no sooner is Zion in labour than she gives birth to her children.”
Jesus pronounced a curse on at least three cities within the land. These remain in ruins today.
Matthew 11:21-23 NIV - “Woe to you, Korazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to the skies? No, you will go down to the depths. If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day.
The restoration of the agriculture and of the trees and forests of Israel has been another remarkable miracle. Scarcely 75 years ago, the land was a desolate waste, full of malarial swamps and deserts. Today the replanted forests are flourishing and the Israeli agricultural production is one of the great wonders of the world. This tiny country exports quality produce around the world. Should we say, “Again, just as predicted!”
Isaiah 26:6 NIV - “In days to come Jacob will take root, Israel will bud and blossom and fill all the world with fruit.”
Isaiah 35:1-2 NIV - “The desert and the parched land will be glad; the wilderness will rejoice and blossom. Like the crocus, it will burst into bloom; it will rejoice greatly and shout for joy….”
1 The burden of the Word of the LORD for Israel, saith the LORD, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the Earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him.
2 Behold, I will make Jerusalem a Cup of Trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem.
3 And in that day will I make Jerusalem a Burdensome Stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the Earth be gathered together against it.
Anyone seen the news over the last years??
December 1st, 2007 at 5:44 pm
Found it again, sorry for name calling
December 4th, 2007 at 3:18 pm
trying to validate religion by quoting religious scriptures is not a smart thing to do. especially when the forum consists people who have just watched an interview with christopher hitchens. few people are educated enough to argue against this man. i doubt that you are one of them.
December 4th, 2007 at 4:27 pm
I would have enjoyed this interview a bit more if there were some squeeky footsteps audible in the background.
December 13th, 2007 at 10:53 pm
wow-in this interview he’s wearing a Yamika and also I find out he’s taking his daughter to various religious services…
December 17th, 2007 at 11:59 am
Every god is different in individual. It is an idea imposed on them as you are born by the parents, and then by the society to control you in certain way. The interactive qualities in man are so crushing emotionally in every uneven transaction that needs a place for reconciliation. So far it was kind of working with god and now it is lost into mental hospitals and central jails. Can we all love each other and work and live in harmony rather than torturing and killing each other, apparently not.
December 19th, 2007 at 9:04 am
Tim forgot the apostrophe. Pity Christ does not teach grammar.
December 19th, 2007 at 4:48 pm
Your ideas are interesting etc. - I’ve read your books and articles - and you’re OK in an individual interview but you’re not good in a group. I saw you in the 4 horses with the other three prominent atheist authors and you constantly interrupted, tried to dominate the discourse and generally were overbearing. I hope you don’t join with them again. And you’re not as articulate as Sam Harris anyway.
December 28th, 2007 at 2:08 am
What happens if the unbelieving guest declines the yarmulka…seems a bit off putting. When I see western women(ie. reporters made to wear head covering,in Islamic settings and those forced,at the extreme, to don that ghastly birqa, I’m offended.
December 31st, 2007 at 3:00 pm
God has spoken in the bible? What a joke. People who believe these fairy stories and perpetuate them should of course be ridiculed and laughed at. I’m sure those sentiments will find general agreement. However neither Tim or his inane regurgitation of religious cant should be attacked on grounds of punctuation. The omission of an apostrophe does not invalidate ones argument. Thank God.
January 1st, 2008 at 12:33 pm
The body language is most telling.
January 6th, 2008 at 8:38 am
The root of all this mischief is the human capacity for belief, since what each of us believes becomes “true” for us. Thus we have people who truly believe they come from outer space, or that it’s good to kill an entire tribe, that spinal adjustment effects cures, or that salvation is possible only through belief in a particular individual who died 2,000 years ago. In every case, attempts to persuade them otherwise will only cause irritation on both sides.
January 22nd, 2008 at 4:22 pm
I love Hitch.
But honestly, he is hypocritical in regards the special privelage he gives to Jews and Judaism. Wearing the cap is like if he wore a cross into a church or a wiccan pentacle if he were to enter into a wiccan temple.
It’s hyprocritical of him because he thinks he is a Jew because his grandmother was; which is an illogical concept{funny that an anti-theistic,rationalistic, contrarian does’nt see the absurditiy and special pleading here}. Meh.
Nonetheless, great interview, and the Hitch rules!!!!
February 1st, 2008 at 8:40 pm
Thanks for sharing
February 6th, 2008 at 12:16 pm
Why doesn’t the interviewer wear a kippa?
February 7th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
.
The Yarmulke.
.
Hardly a “cross” or bearing such significance as the latter
would have.
We think nothing of Amanpour swaddling herself in the attire
demanded in terrorist countries.
.
It was explained early on why he wore it.
Yes,he is an atheist.
But since his mother was Jewish, he is indeed a Jew, though he does not follow Jewish law or the laws of any other religion.
.
He speaks rather swiftly with a vocabulary few Americans possess.
If you do not believe me…write down the adjectives he uses and
see if you are as fluent as Hitchens.
I admit I am not one of them.
.
There are few people like him who can back their ideas with such
a knowledgeable store of history.
.
Best we hear what he has to say~rather than get stuck on hos Yarmulke. Including~ our inability to understand Hitchens thanks
to an educational system that leaves us bankrupt in usage of
vocablary.
.
What is in his mind far supercedes anything on his head.
The religious background of his mother or grandmother mean nothing.
I have yet to see him be a hypocrite.
Those we can find on Capitol Hill and in the halls of Ive League
Colleges/Universities as “tenured” and honored professors.
February 8th, 2008 at 2:33 pm
I am amazed at the level of affirmation Hitchins’s writing has regarding my own outlook. I find in it, both confirmation and comfort.
I am rather proud to see that I have reached the same conclusions on the subject of religion, as the likes of Einstein and Hawking.
I only regret that I wont be around to see these medieval dynasties go the way of the dinosaur.
Truth is pure, religion is not.
February 12th, 2008 at 11:46 pm
Those of you who are saying he has never criticized Israel have never actually read anything he`s written. He has many times condemned the settlements on the West Bank and in Gaza, and condemned those who encourage the creation of more settlements on the stolen land.
Hitchens is fantastic.
February 17th, 2008 at 10:17 pm
Let’s be frank! Whilst we beat Hitchens over his
knowlegable head~ Let us also acknowledge the many
Israelis who are more than happy to hand over The
Holy Land to the Arabs.
.
Plenty of peace-niks in Israel have the land on a silver
platter…ready, happily to give it to killers.I cannot
understand why they are not derided with equal anger as
that splattered over Hitchens. He is no Israeli.
.
Is Alfred aware that Yair Lapid~ the darling of the Israeli
left was a cheerleader as the Jews were dragged from
Gush Katif? Does one call that:”respect for one’s fellow
Israeli?”
.
Seems to me that is where the anger needs to be aimed.
.
Shalom~ Hashem keep Israel and Israelis united.

Alty Weinreb: Pray tell, you read the full video description before asking questions.
February 29th, 2008 at 2:38 pm
What I love the most about atheist is how they themselves are in the same category as religious folk. Atheist love to claim that they are smarter and superior than religious folks, by stating that they use logic and reason. This is laughable at best for there is no evidence that a god does/does not exist. Therefore the only group of people who actually use logic and reason when it comes to an existence of god, are indeed agnostic.
Atheist rely heavily on breaking down and attacking religious text to further stroke their own egos and use as the main basis of their belief. Atheism is a belief system in itself. Whether or not its a system composed of a bunch of intellectuals is irrelevant.
And lastly, I would hope that people would have enough sense to know there is a huge gap between religion and the idea of a supreme cosmic force in the universe. It’s funny when people think a higher power does not exist because they proved a line in the holy texts as wrong. Once again atheist, disproving a religion does NOT disprove the actual possiblity of a higher supreme being. Anti-theism and Atheism are two different things, at times I think even atheist themselves do not know this. Ah well.. good interview anyway.

him wearing a yarmulke as a sign of respect is a total joke. he’s geeked about having found out he’s jewish and wants to let the world know.

The kid interviewing him drove me crazy. Every time Hitchens looked up at him, he looked down at his notes. He was clearly terrified to make eye contact. I could barely focus on the questions and answers because I just wanted to grab that kid by the shoulders and shake him and scream at him to look people in the eye like man. But of course he’s not a man, so I should probably relax.

I found these beautiful and accurate takes on Hitch the Snitch (some call Hitchbitch):
Christopher Hitchens should realize that if someone like himself can turn years of shoveling excrements into a big, pseudo-intellectual journey, then there must be a God after all. —Kelly Van Hellenburg, Tokyo, Japan
Nobody is more dangerous than a war supporting, genocide loving atheist. Many say that this Chris Hitchens, the self described contrarian and an atheist, will actually say anything as long as there are some financial-fashionable perks to it. Even though there is money in religion, it is not fashionable, hence the invention of this new genre; professional atheism. IN saner times people like Hitchens would be tried for war crimes for their supporting of an illegal war that has cost half a million lives, 4 million refugees and tens of thousands of innocent women forced into prostitution. For this fascist to come and talk about religious fanatics is indeed a sub-pathetic joke. I wonder how his wife can tolerate his uncouth looks, bad boozy breath and generally uncultured behavior.
